Tendons are the cords of tissue that connect muscles and bones. Injuries to tendons can be debilitating and often require surgery and rehabilitation. The use of Levaquin has been associated with an increased risk of tendon ruptures, tendon damage, and tendonitis, which has left many users permanently disabled after taking the drug. Levaquin, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson’s Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 to treat sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections. Levaquin is an antibiotic that is part of a group of drugs known as fluoroquinolones. It is prescribed to prevent infection by stopping the reproduction of bacteria.
All fluoroquinolone antibiotics are associated with increased risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture, but the risk appears to be greater with Levaquin. According to reports received by the FDA, Levaquin tendon ruptures accounted for 61 percent of all ruptures associated with fluoroquinolones between November 1997 and December 2005. After several petitions to the FDA to place "Black Box" warning labels on fluoroquinolones (the strongest labeling the FDA can order against a drug), the FDA directed Johnson & Johnson to add such a warning in 2008. By the time the warning labels for Levaquin were enhanced, the drug had been prescribed to countless people and many had suffered the painful side effect of tendon rupture.
When companies act negligently and allow a dangerous drug into the marketplace, it is you, the consumer, who is hurt while the company rakes in profits. Negligent drug companies must be held liable for the lives they destroy. If you or a loved one has suffered tendon problems due to Levaquin, consider filing a Levaquin lawsuit.
