Over 35 million Americans use denture creams or adhesives to keep their dentures in place. High levels of zinc that are contained in these products may be absorbed into the body through the mouth and gums. The result of excess zinc can be a serious neurologic disease. Symptoms associated with zinc toxicity include intestinal distress, inability to urinate, skin reactions, jaundice, seizures, joint pain, chills, fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Increased levels of zinc may also cause reduced copper levels in the blood, known as hypocupremia. This may lead to neuropathy and affect the nerves, potentially causing loss of balance and coordination, tingling and numbness, extreme sensitivity to touch, and muscle weakness, cramps, and spasms.
Zinc is an essential element for good health with about 40 milligrams being the maximum recommended daily dose (with the recommended daily allowance being around 10 milligrams). However, researchers have estimated that users of denture adhesive creams like Proctor and Gamble’s Fixodent and GlaxoSmithKline’s Poligrip and Super Poligrip may be exposed to as much as 330 milligrams of zinc per day. These creams contain zinc concentrations between 17,000 and 34,000 micrograms per gram, and denture wearers often apply the creams multiple times throughout the day to secure ill-fitting dentures.
Denture cream lawsuits have been filed against the GlaxoSmithKline and Proctor and Gamble for their alleged failure to fully disclose the ingredients and to warn customers that excessive zinc can lead to zinc poisoning, a potentially deadly condition. Zinc poisoning must be caught and treated early in order to have the best chance of a full recovery. If you or someone you know uses Poligrip or Fixodent and has become ill from the use of these denture creams, we recommend you contact a pharmaceutical lawyer who can determine if you are eligible for compensation and can protect your legal rights.
